College Mourns Death of Dr. Dan White

J. Daniel White, Jr., described as a guru in the original sense of the word and a significant part of the history of UNC Charlotte, passed away on June 12, 2018 following a brief illness. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, June 23 at Myers Park Baptist Church. 

Colleagues Remember Beloved English Professor

Anita West Moss, 74, professor of English, died Wednesday, April 11 following a brief illness. Described as an avid reader, lover of fine film and theater, enlightened conversationalist, and progressive intellectual, Moss joined UNC Charlotte's Department of English in 1972 and continued teaching until a week before her death.

UNC Charlotte Honors Renowned Scholar Loy H. Witherspoon Upon His Death

Loy H. Witherspoon, professor emeritus of philosophy and religious studies at UNC Charlotte and a longtime confidant to University founder Bonnie Cone, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 15, in Charlotte. The founding chair of the Department of Religious Studies, Witherspoon retired in 1994 after 30 years of distinguished service at the University. “Loy Witherspoon embodied the values and aspirations of UNC Charlotte,” said Nancy Gutierrez, dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

College Colleagues Remember Morton Shapiro

UNC Charlotte's Morton Shapiro, 84, who retired as a member of the English faculty in 1993, died on September 11, 2015. He was one of the university's original English Department faculty, and will be fondly remembered by his friends, colleagues, and students.

Researcher Passes Away After Lifelong Battle With Cystic Fibrosis

Joshua R. Stokell, a UNC Charlotte post-doctoral fellow, died on Monday, June 8 as a result of complications arising from his lifelong battle with Cystic Fibrosis. Visitation will be Thursday, June 11, from 3 to 7 p.m. at McEwen Derita Chapel, 6300 Mallard Creek Road, Charlotte. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m.

Colleagues Remember Public Policy Professor in Time of Loss

Faculty emeritus Ken Godwin, who was a faculty member in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration and affiliated with the Ph.D. in Public Policy Program, passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2018. Among numerous attributes, he was well known for his exceptional mentorship of graduate students, particularly in the areas of education policy and environmental policy.

University Community Mourns Death Of A Colleague

We lost a member of our UNC Charlotte community this weekend. Jeannine Skinner, assistant professor of gerontology/psychology in the Department of Psychological Science, passed away at age 35. Nancy Gutierrez, dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and Nancy Fey-Yensan, dean of the College of Health and Human Services, have extended their condolences.

Long-time Geography and Earth Sciences Faculty Member Passes Away

Longtime UNC Charlotte colleague and Professor Emeritus Alfred (Al) Wright Stuart passed away on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015 after a brief illness. He was a retired member of the faculty of the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences.

Memorial Service Set for Professor Emeritus Bashor

Professor Emeritus of Biology David Bashor died on August 16. His memorial will be held on Monday, Aug. 24 at 4 p.m. at Providence United Methodist Church.

Community Mourns Death of History Alumnus in Train Derailment

Derrick Griffith, a UNC Charlotte alumnus who was completed his bachelor’s degree in history and was an outstanding student leader in the early 1990s, has been identified as one of seven people killed in an Amtrak train derailment in Philadelphia on Tuesday, May 12, as the train headed to New York.
